All you football-only diehards, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm gonna take a detour here. Been covering this Caps/Flyers series pretty closely and just figured I'd clear out my head and notebook on the offday before driving back up to Philly for Game 4 tomorrow.

I love that new era capsCoach Bruce Boudreau is sticking to his guns in terms of his overall philosophy - rolling four lines, trying to play up-tempo, attacking hockey with an aggressive forecheck, allowing his defensemen to jump up in the play, letting the kids play. But it's also very dangerous this time of year to get too married to your personnel, to continue to view everything through the prism of that glorious 37-17-7 run, to believe that since it happened then it'll happen now. Were the 2007-2008 new era capsreally a 50 win team, as that record under Boudreau would point to if for a full season? Are they really so good and so deep as to be beyond the need for serious midseries repairs?

I've seen many, many,. many an NHL team lose it's identity, fast, in the postseason, and that's clubs way more experienced than this. Often, it takes a hard re-think, and sweeping changes, to usher in a transformation of sorts, and a new aura. You can't just assumed you'll get that potent power play back without altering the five-man units, or that your best player will just become the best player in this mini-series regardless of how effectively the opposition is matching up with him.

This new era capsteam became such a great story precisely because they were overachievers. They were confident and buoyant and played over their heads based on emotion and savvy coaching and young guys feeding off one another and an ubber-positive vibe. But that's no longer the case. The regular season is over, long over now, and you can no longer argue that goalie Cristobal Huet still has that certain mojo working, or the entire team for that matter. What worked against Atlanta and Tampa and the like during that 11-1 run ain't necessarily going to get it done against a Philly team that is now more confident and looser than the Caps, not to mention more physical and effective.


I fully appreciate how much credit this staff deserves for righting this ship and stabilizing this franchise, and to me there's no doubt Boudreau should get the Adams Trophy as coach of the year for what he did from Thanksgiving through early April. But the differences between playoff hockey and the regular season cannot be overstated. I worry that if he is truly as rigid in regards to his lineup as he said he would be following Game 3 that by the time he gets around to making major adjustments it will already be too late.

He blanched when asked about replacing Huet. I'd make the move, ASAP, for reasons I presented in the paper today. It's not like you're turning to the usual back-up here. Not even close. I tried to push Boudreau about adding Brooks Laich - whose screen led to one power play goal with the second PP unit and who scored late on a redirection to the top of the crease - to the top unit, and the coach rebuffed the notion, pointing to how great the first unit was for 40 games. Again, that wasn't against this Flyers team every night, not under the glare of the postseason, not with the season dangling now.

To me Backstrom and Fedorov are redundant - both man the halfwall and fill a similar role. I put Laich in for Backstrom and force him to get in goalie Martin Biron's face (when the new era capshave pressed the smallish goalie he's looked very beatable - they just aren't getting nearly enough traffic or pucks to net). Plant Laich in the crease and the Flyers finally have to pull a forward lower in the circles, and get the defenseman closer to the crease. It opens up space for Green and Ovechkin on the point - and they make this thing go - and gives them more opportunities for the back door weakside plays as well, which Philly has keyed on taking away (and with no presence around the net, all the easier to do so).

Backstrom is struggling bigtime, and no shame in that. It happens to rookies in the playoffs. But he's being asked to do a ton, too. Taking a backseat on the PP could help refocus him at even strength. Boudreau seems married to his lines, but Kozlov and Backstrom have been passengers on the tip unit. I break it up, pronto, and try Fedorov with Ovechkin and maybe even Laich on the right side. Again, he could retrieve the puck - it's gonna take dump and chase to beat that Philly trap - and that's not Kozlov. Laich in front of the net makes Ovechkin's shot all the more deadly.

I think they need to infuse a new chemistry if possible and Fedorov should feed off the promotion. Backstrom can take a turn trying to breathe life into Semin, who save for that lethal release of his on a few wrist shots from the high slot has been very poor (his desire to compete has long been questioned by scouts and GMs, the one thing keeping him from being a true star in the league). You can slot Kozlov here on the second line if you must, and I guess there's no place else to put him cuz he won't fit with your checking line or fourth line. (Call me old school, but again, I'd consider sitting him and putting Cooke with this unit, and bringing Kozlov back in Game 5 might really light a fire under him)..

While the third line has been so-so, the Donald Brashear led fourth line deserves more minutes. Go back and look at their goals in this series. It's all textbook, simple, playoff hockey. Brashear just goes to the net in Game 1. Bradley wins a puck in the corner on a dump, draws to Flyers and Steckel's alone in the slot (and he attacks Biron's suspect glove hand high, something the new era capsstunningly have gotten away from). Then in Game 3 Brashear is awesome behind the net, using that big frame to shield the puck and draw a forward deep, then finds Fehr at the top of the crease with space.

That's how you're going to beat the Flyers. That's how to exploit the underbelly of their third defensive pair, who get caught flatfooted in the cycle and make bad decisions under pressure with the puck.

When defenseman Mike Green is by far your best offensive thrust and Brashear is your most effective forwards, well, you've got problems my friend and it's time for big changes.

Also, Ovechkin needs to get looks against defensemen other than Timonen (and his injury could prove huge if it keeps him out of the lineup). Put Ovechkin with Gordon or Steckel as his center sometimes and give it a go. Give him more shifts, but demand that each shift be much shorter, not the 90-second marathons we've seen.

Rigidity can be crippling in a series, and simply stating that players need to battle harder to overcome the punishment they are receiving isn't enough, either. Tactical decisions and match-ups define the very essence of playoff hockey. Scotty Bowman, the best ever, was never afraid to tinker - he was also something of a genius at this stuff and it would unfair to try to compare anyone to him. But lines are made to be shuffled, and when I covered the Wings Scotty would often use 12-15 different combinations in the opening period of a playoff game ... and that's even when things are going good. It forces the opposition to react, and breaks up matchups that favor them. It gets them wondering and guessing at what look is coming next. Now, the new era capsdon't have to go to those extremes, but opening the game with a reworked top line would be a start.

As for the defense, the idea that Milan Jurcina is somehow a lock to play baffles me, and while I think Steve Eminger may well be another first round bust, I can't believe he isn't one of the six best options amid this group, especially with Schultz ailing. Erskine adds grit but he's struggled mightily too, and this is when issues in your defense really come to life. (Pairing Erskine and Jurcina together on the PK surprised me as well, that's a scary combination. The new era capsneed to add a top three defender with a nasty streak to take the next step, but that's not happening now so I'm giving Eminger a shot and hope that he keeps his feet moving and makes simple plays with the puck. (With Schultz out he's probably gonna play regardless. I know the new era capsdidn't want to call up Josef Boumedienne from the minors for fear he would be a waiver claim, but I also know he has skill and flair with the puck and plenty of experience and I say you gamble that he doesn't get picked up, because again you can't convince me he isn't one of their top six blueliners right now. And if he gets claimed, then so be it, but what have you got to lose now?)

In the end, this team has turned the corner and will be a playoff contender for years to come. It's been a marvelous rise, and it doesn't have to end. If it does, the new era capsstill deserve all the credit in the world for even getting here, and the experience these kids are getting on the fly will pay big dividends down the road. They are heading in the right direction, and I'll be very interested to see what new wrinkles, if any, are revealed Thursday night.

Pity poor Sarah Ferguson (remember her?), the ex-wife of Prince Andrew whose 1986 marriage blissfully passed me by. She was never a very popular member of the Royal Family, perhaps because she seemed too much like a good time girl, a kind of fun-loving Sloane Ranger, the type who would return from her autumn holiday in the Caribbean and then immediately get to work... planning her winter skiing trip. Diana, on the other hand, radiated a demure shyness, an almost saintly goodness and vulnerability.

Poor Fergie. She's damned if she continued with the life of Riley but equally damned for slumming it for a week and daring to populate the streets of Manchester with her plummy voice. Sadly, it seems to me, the only people who can afford to understand these lost "hoodies" who populate our "broken" communities are privileged individuals who know they won't have to spend much time with them. The rest of us can't wait to get away from them and have long since lost our compassion. But back to poor Fergie. She was later caught out by Radio 5 interviewer Richard Bacon when he asked her opinion of the recent furore over the state of the British National Health Service, i.e Bacon was trying to lure her into making an opinion about what is - after all - one of the most controversial but important issues of the day. Fergie couldn't give an answer, saying that she "would have to read all the facts first", as if she needed, after 50 years of life as a British citizen, to familiarise herself with the merits or otherwise of the NHS. So perhaps it's best if she does stay in America, after all.

The Making Of The Air Yeezy

With an insistence on looking retro, feeling luxe and offering extreme comfort, early on the look of the shoe remained more subtle, while the bulk of the initial attention would be paid towards the attention-getting elements, like the out-of-control tongue size, shape and height. “I just kept saying, ‘Well, if it’s truly a retro-ish product, it should be very simple.’ Things weren’t very complicated back in the day,” begins Mark Smith. “The McFly had I think three pieces. There was the upper, outsole and then some interesting stuff going on in the midsole. [The goal was] the more that I could simplify it, and yet keep it a modern retro, so you couldn’t tell really from a distance if it was new or old until you got an up-close look at the details.”

Sure enough, the upper of the shoe took on a clean and simplified look throughout the early stages of the process, as it was the collar molding and midfoot strap that took the most time to get right. Though Smith is generally the lead designer on most projects he works on, this instance proved to be a bit different as Kanye injected his design thoughts and sketches as much as possible as well. But, every time a new element appeared, Smith insisted on removing another. “I’m a reductionist,” he says. As with most of Mark Smith’s projects, Chanhmy Vongxay, the Senior Footwear Technician at Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, is often the person tasked with creating an initial sample based off of any of his sketches. After Kanye and Smith met in May of 2007 and began to sketch out some thoughts and ideas, Vongxay pieced together the very first pull-over sample of the nike air yeezy,buy air yeezyYeezy, which was heavily inspired by the nike air yeezy,buy air yeezyJordan V, and can be seen below.

As the upper evolved along the timeline, the panels all began to flow together, and the team was clear on how the heel quarter would be split by a vertical line and the forefoot of the shoe would feature a clean toe cap. Other changes include the elimination of the sizable external heel counter, drafted off of the nike air yeezy,buy air yeezyMag, as well as the tongue and collar scaling down to a manageable size. Somewhat manageable at least. Oh, and there was also the dominant midfoot strap, of course. After starting out with a D-ring along the medial side (seen to the left), a simple velcro closure was deemed the best solution, as the strap would go on to lay flat instead.

While the design lines and silhouette proved to be fairly simple, choosing the materials would ended up being an ordeal on its own. “The biggest trouble that ever came about had to do with the materials and selection. We would do a suede or a leather or a patent, and you can kind of see that in the final three colorways, they’re all a bit different,” explains Tiffany Beers. “We just kept sampling in different colors and different materials, trying to find that super-quality, soft, plush leather that both Mark and Kanye wanted. It took us a while to find a leather. We even took one of Kanye’s leather jackets that he sent us, and we cut it up and made a shoe out of it.”

There was quite a bit of activity for the Washington Capitals on Labor Day, the first official day of the 2009-10 season, at Kettler IcePlex in Ballston, Virginia. After the rookies were on the ice in the morning, which we will get to in a couple of paragraphs, 13 veteran skaters, rookie goalie Michal Neuvirth, and the jordan caps, sports caps website producer, goalie Brett “Stretch” Leonhardt, took the rink over for some action. The skaters participating were Mike Green, Mike Knuble, Chris Clark, Matt Bradley, Brendan Morrison, Brooks Laich, Boyd Gordon, John Erskine, Shaone Morrisonn, Jeff Schultz, Dave Steckel, Brian Pothier and Jay Beagle.

The players did a number of drills, conducted a half ice scrimmage, and then finished with some skating sprints. Of note was the condition of Green, who appears to be in phenomenal shape. Wilson was his usual provocative self, articulate and pretentious: in one sentence he compared himself to the enthusiastic Pierre Bezukhov, who is thrust into the nobility in Tolstoy's War and Peace, and the Hollies singer and "Salford lad" Graham Nash.

His protégés were less forthcoming. Initially shy, the three teenagers and one 20 year old warmed up a little when talking about their music, though the scene still resembles an embarrassing dad asking his offspring about Eminem over Christmas dinner.

The portrayal of teenage boys as "yobs" in the media has made the boys wary of other teenagers, according to new research.


Figures show more than half of the stories about teenage boys in national and regional newspapers in the past year (4,374 out of 8,629) were about crime. The word most commonly used to describe them was "yobs" (591 times), followed by "thugs" (254 times), "sick" (119 times) and "feral" (96 times).

Other terms often used included "hoodie", "louts", "heartless", "evil" "frightening", "scum", "monsters", "inhuman" and "threatening".

The research – commissioned by Women in Journalism – showed the best chance a teenager had of receiving sympathetic coverage was if they died.

"We found some news coverage where teen boys were described in glowing terms – 'model student', 'angel', 'altar boy' or 'every mother's perfect son'," the research concluded, "but sadly these were reserved for teenage boys who met a violent and untimely death."

At the same time a survey of nearly 1,000 teenage boys found 85 per cent believed newspapers portray them in a bad light.

They felt reality TV – with shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent – portrayed them in a better light – with fewer than 20 per cent believing they were being portrayed negatively.

As a result of the negative press, 80 per cent felt adults were more wary of them now than they had been a year ago. However, the most striking finding, according to the research, was that many were now more wary of boys of their own age. "It seems the endless diet of media reports about 'yobs' and 'feral' youths is making them fearful of other teens," it said. "Nearly a third said they are 'always' or 'often' wary of teenage boys they don't know.

"The most popular reason for their wariness, cited by 51 per cent was 'media stories about teen boys' compared with 40 per cent who said their wariness was based on their own or friends' bad experiences of other teens."

Nearly three-quarters said they had changed their behaviour as a result of this wariness. The most common change, cited by 45.7 per cent, was boys avoiding places where teenagers hung around. Others included dressing differently (14.2 per cent), and changing who they were seen with (11.9 per cent). "For much of the press, there is no such thing as a good news story about teenagers," it added.

"Stories about sport and entertainment, which might have balanced other negative coverage, also took a critical line. Only 16 per cent of stories about teens and entertainment were positive: only 24 per cent about teens and sport were positive."

The research found that – for all the coverage of teenage issues – the boys' voices themselves were rarely heard in newspapers. Fewer than one in 10 articles about young people actually quoted young people or included their perspectives in the debate.

Fiona Bawden, the WiJ committee member who presented the research at the British Library, said: "When a photo of a group of perfectly ordinary lads standing around wearing hooded tops has become visual shorthand for urban menace, or even the breakdown of society, it's clear teenage boys have a serious image problem.

"The teen boys' 'brand' has become toxic. Media coverage of boys is unrelentingly negative, focusing almost entirely on them as victims or perpetrators of crime – and our research shows that the media is helping make teenage boys fearful of each other."

In a speech regarding social justice tomorrow, Conservative leader David Cameron is expected to call for better understanding of teenagers who wear "hoodies".

Mr Cameron will say that teenagers who wear hooded tops are trying to "blend in" rather than appear intimidating.
